Eyelid Surgery

Removal of excess eyelid skin and repositioning of fat. The shortest recovery on this list, with most patients socially presentable within two weeks.

Medical clearance

History and physical with your primary care physician within 30 days of surgery.
EKG if requested based on your age or cardiac history.
Lab work as instructed. Requirements vary by procedure and by your history.
Bring a written list of every medication and supplement you take, including doses.

Two weeks before

Stop aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and most herbal supplements. These thin the blood.
Stop nicotine in every form, including cigarettes, vaping, patches, and gum. Nicotine constricts the small vessels that feed healing tissue and is the single largest controllable risk for wound complications.
Avoid alcohol.
Fill your prescriptions now so they are waiting at home rather than being collected on the way back from surgery.

One week before

Set up your recovery space. Somewhere you can rest elevated, with water, medications, phone charger, and snacks within arm's reach.
Arrange your ride, your overnight adult, and any childcare or pet care.
Do your grocery shopping. Soft, low-sodium foods and plenty of fluids.
Confirm your arrival time with the office.

The night before

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. This includes water, gum, mints, and coffee.
Shower with the antibacterial soap provided or recommended by the office.
Remove nail polish, jewelry, and all body piercings.
Sleep. Set two alarms.

The morning of surgery

Wear a loose, front-closing top and soft pants with an elastic waist. Nothing that pulls over your head.
No makeup, lotion, deodorant, perfume, or contact lenses.
Bring your ID, insurance card, and a responsible adult driver.
A responsible adult must remain with you for the first 24 hours.

Specific to eyelid surgery

Arrange a driver and someone to help for the first day. Your vision will be blurry from ointment.
Preservative-free artificial tears and cold compresses ready at home.
Sunglasses for going outside, and a wedge pillow for sleeping elevated.
No contact lenses for at least two weeks after surgery.
